Fatwa Arbuckle: Misanthropologist

Hee! Grumpy Cat is still my spirit animal.

Happy Caturday from Happy Larryville, where -- due to global warmening -- the current temp is a happy 33ºF.

Thank heavens we have Saint Scoldilocks to save us!!

Paddy --

Hope the letter about your cow-worker is/was well-received; it sucks that you had to write that.

DV8 --

Glad you got some clearly-needed sleep; SackO’SugarK ran a snooze-deficit all last week, retired very early last night and is currently still slug-a-bed.

BTW, perhaps my age-addled memory is faulty, but my recollection of “olden times” is that the M.O. thread was largely Harper and Mac; used to enjoy perusing it while glugging-down morning caffeine.

Sven --

I’ve been pretty vexed by the spin our media betters have put on the LeBaron family killings. Largely due to the number of kids killed coupled with the “perhaps they had it coming; here’s why” narrative attempt.

(While I’m still no Trump fan, I quite appreciate his daily nettling of the media; it’s been long overdue.)

BBIAB.

Best wishes to Paddy.

I think your mostly right about the MO. I’d get on the Midnight Oil sometimes. I think Harper and Mac were some of the few that were always up all night.

Re the Prez. Love him or hate him, you gotta admit he rattles the press and gets them to talk about what he wants them to talk about. No other Republican in my memory has been able to come up with a strategy for doing that.

It even looks like he’ll be able to keep that up, going forward. He really is hilarious. My assertion in the beginning was that people always say it would be good to have an outsider in the white house to shake things up, but when it actually happens everyone panics. I try to concentrate on the positive things he’s doing.

I certainly have friends in small business who have told me his regulation policy has definitely affected their businesses in a positive way and the tax stuff has been helpful also.

Good morning, Fatwa.

Like Fatwa, Paddy, I hope your letter is received in the spirit in which you wrote it and that there isn’t any blow back.

Happy Caturday, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Fatwa, and Sven!

Sorry to hear about your weather, Fatwa -- it will only get up to a frigid 88°F around here.

My letter appears to have been received without negative consequences, but also without much action.

We’re going to brew up a test batch (1 gal.) of an amber ale with agave syrup this afternoon. We’re trying to replicate a beer from a local brewery that’s closing down.

I had to write an email to my school’s principal, expressing concerns regarding a particular teacher’s efforts. The principal is known to be very protective of her teachers and doesn’t like that the Special Education department is not under her. The response I got was better than expected, although I will need to follow up on Tuesday.

If I want decent Classical MIDIs I hafta make em myself. It’s almost two much trouble to fix the wacky ones you get on the online archives: I don’t know what converter ppl are useing, but it can’t be humans making these.

notes are usually but not always quantized, Lengths are random. Don’t correspond to measure lines or time signatures. Sometimes everything is on one track sometimes all the notes are on random tracks--that may be a range filter from a notation program like Sibelius, Not sure. Anyway, I dunno, when I make a MIDI file, myself, I try to use multiple tracks that make sense, so any MIDI program that has staff view will display things in a readable fashion. I’m frustrated at the moment as I was hoping that some of these archives might save me some time and/or work.

I wish I had more knowledge of video-making concepts. Apart from live stream compositing, I’m starting from square one. Plus, I have no talent for the visual arts.

¡Hola, Paddy y DV8!

Paddy --

Glad your letter hasn’t caused you any problems; hope it winds-up being more effective than you think it’s been thus far.

Good luck with teh amber ale experiment!

Teh weather’s just a harbinger of Monday and Tuesday nights, with lows in the 20s; bah! At least there’s no snow / ice in the forecast (because -- reassurances notwithstanding -- the local gummints are utterly incapable of dealing with such extreeeeeeeeeme weather). 😉

DV8 --

That Young Turks edit is an “always amusing”.

I don’t think I’ve ever downloaded a classical MIDI; haven’t downloaded any MIDIs since afore I left L.A. in ’04 as they were uniformly hideous and useless. (And General MIDI instruments of that era were a horror; they made ’80s Casio stuff sound good by comparison.)

Re MIDI and modern music technology: owning the “means of production” (which I truly appreciate being able to do) sure as hell doesn’t equate with good -- or even sensible -- results. As is so often the case with affordable technology, end users are effectively limitless in their ability to do profoundly dumb shit.

Oh…speaking of affordable music tech, I’m pretty damned impressed with the value in Spitfire Audio’s new “BBC Symphony Orchestra” library:

https://www.spitfireaudio.com/shop/a-z/bbc-symphony-orchestra/

If I were still pursuing TV scoring, I’d have already acquired it (as my current Mac slightly exceeds the minimum requirements).

As re Trump: I’m no fan-boy, however…

I’m glad he won over his competition.

He’s done significantly better thus far than I”d have expected; especially re reducing regulations and taxes.

He has exposed much of the depth and breadth of the “Deep State”. (I used to wonder if I was paranoid about it; turns out my paranoia was warranted and off by at least an order of magnitude.)

He’s been good for the economy.

He doesn’t hate America.

(I also kind of like that he trolls people on social media.)

back atcha! Pretty much my view on all things Trump.

Re MIDI: I’m using them for a specific purpose, It’s kind of an experiment. (One that’s been ongoing in hobby form for a decade or so, but now suddenly I have a reason to perfect a set of techniques for live performance which is helped by storing information in MIDI form.

Best wishes re sorting-out acceptable techniques for what you’re doing…and acquiring the technology you need at little or no cost. 🙂

Plus, I have no talent for the visual arts.

Same here.

(Plus, if there’s such a thing as being “counter-telegenic”, I haz it.)

Well got some housework done today -- finished cleaning up the branches in the yards from the last climate change winds. Tomorrow we are taking our old friend that’s been sick to a casino south of here. He wants to say thank you for helping him out the last couple of months. Would rather we did it on a Saturday as we both work Monday, but apparently this casino has something special for veterans so Sunday it is.

Browsing the news -- same old shit. Trump is an imperfect vessel, but he’s changed the face of politics in America forever and about damn time.
