Congratters on your impending acquisition of a 1911; that’s mighty nice of Mrs. Sven. Hope you have fun doing your research and “test driving”. (SiL had a Kimber 1911 for a while which I really enjoyed shooting).

It’s cool that you put so much work into your Father’s 1911; thanks for teh pic. I share your thoughts about “personal reconditioning” (although being 59-y.o. has been pretty good thus far).

Nice that teh Knights plied you with free beer…and that KFH&BBQ is so close to your home. 😉
A blessed Sabbath, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Fatwa!
The hot weather pattern finally broke yesterday evening and we should have back-to-normal temps all this week. Teh Yay!
Gas prices continue to go up -- the cheapest in my area is $3.75. A little over a month ago I could purchase it for under $3.
We got our water bill yesterday -- we pay more for the water and sewer connection charge than we do for the actual amount of water we use. Our water district uses a tiered rate structure, calculating both your indoor and outdoor water budget. If you use only your indoor budget, you’re on the ‘conservation’ tier. If you stay within your indoor plus outdoor budget, you’re in the ‘efficient’ tier. We’ve really been cutting back on watering the lawns and have replaced most of the plants with California native plants. We figured we would just let the backyard die this summer and the front would be a bit crispy. Well, after looking at the bill, I told Mrs. Paddy we could double our water usage and still stay within the ‘conservation’ tier and it would only add $11 to our bill. It looks like the backyard will live to see another year.
As Paddy noted, gas prices have skyrocketed the last couple of weeks. I don’t know if it’s the CA summer blend of gasoline, or something else or just because. Food prices have gone up as well and who knows what will happen to water rates once Gov Moonbeam figures out the most draconian way to give it to us up the a**.
On the other hand, and this makes no sense to me at all, our homeowners insurance rates, which have doubled each year for the last three years, have now been cut in half over what we ended up with last year.
Thought I’d go out shopping for my 1911 this weekend, but this weekend like the last several have just not worked out. The other thing Im thinking about is that we just don’t go shooting all that often: do I really want to drop $1000 for something that I might use once a year? Need to talk to Mrs Sven: if I do get it, then we need to recommit ourselves to the sport.
Thoughts and prayers, Rabbit, for you and BW and the rest of you galoots here at teh wheel. Nice to see Kate, and Tim, and X, and NW stopping by. Not that it isnt nice to see everybody else too….you know what I mean.
I watched the talking news heads this morning as they sagely discussed the riots and the situation in Baltimore…one of America’s great cities. Really? I got relatives there, have visited it a couple of times, but I’ve never seen it on a list of great anythings.
Anyhow, my takeaway from all the punditry is that regardless of what a black man does, he’s not to blame cuz racism. Cuz slavery. Cuz otherwise, I just don’t see the logical progression from Zimmerman (black youth killed while attacking armed white-Hispanic) to Ferguson (black youth killed while attacking armed police officer) to New York (black man killed while resisting arrest) to Baltimore.
Sven, what type of 1911 were you thinking of, basic general purpose handgun, target type setup with adjustable sights and target accuracy job and trigger, combat type?
What I’m looking for is primarily a defensive weapon, but one that I can take to the range. I have one 1911 now, a Springfield Armory A1 with a 5 inch barrel that I bought used 15 years ago.
Regardless of what model I decide on, I’m really concerned about the sights. My eyes have gotten progressively worse the last few years.
Watching the news out of Texas where radical Christians, no scratch that, radical Jews, no, not them either, uh maybe racist Tea Partiers…no doesnt look like them either….anyhow, someone attacked a cartoon event.
I wonder if anyone will find Molly Norris and ask her to comment?
And by tomorrow morning, Obama or one of his minions will make a statement saying that this event was an unnecessary provocation on the organizer’s part. MSNBC will blow the islamophobia horn loudly and it will again be our fault.
(Riffing off of Mac’s thread pic)
Sunday morning salutations from Larryville, GN!

Hai, Paddy!
Your water bill / rates are another example of bureaucratic idiocy leading to perverse incentives.
“Death to the snail darterrrrr!”

Two guys at work have recommended Kimbers.
