In addition to Glen Frey, we also lost trumpet and trombone player Mic Gillette, one of the original members of Tower of Power. (He also played with a lot of other people.) He had a hell of a reputation as a music educator and was only 64.
I remember very well the first time I heard ToP. My brother and I were driving home from a gig listening to WMMS and they played this tune:
I bought the album the next day and its influence on a 17-year-old me -- especially as an arranger -- cannot be overstated.

Thanks for that, Fatwa.
I miss music that was music.
Yesterday I was finishing a book called “Hotel California” about the whole folkie to hippie period of Laurel Canyon and then I looked up & saw that he died. I never bought an Eagles album, just listened on the radio.
It’s still out there…and there’s more of it than ever. We just don’t have a relatively limited mass media “funneling” it to us; you have to go looking for it a little bit.
(Most of the stuff that gets airplay and/or hyped these days tends to be “lowest common denominator” scheiß.)
I’ve discovered a lot of new music I like via http://pandora.com . You can put in the name of an artist you like, and it’ll start playing other songs their software thinks you might like, to which you can give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Which helps it zero-in on your particular taste(s); the algorithms work pretty well.
And it’s free. 🙂
I’ll have to check out the book you mentioned, too.
Mrs Sven got in safely to her hotel last night. Says it’s cold, but everyone is friendly and helpful so she’s less nervous--all the locals giving the old California girl advice on how to survive in sub zero weather.
Good morning!
Back to the grind at work after a really good day yesterday. I have 1 day left of antibiotics and my voice is back to normal. I felt good enough yesterday to get up early, call in to work for a “surf’s up” day off to watch my son conquer huge waves ..WoW! Walked about 6 miles total.. I even sprinted up the La Valencia Hotel stairs from the beach to get coffee.(a lot of stairs).
We then attended Larry Gordon’s memorial paddle out..I didnt paddle because I didnt want to get chilled and risk having a relapse. but there was a nice ceremony on the beach with bagpipes before all the surfers paddled out beyond the big sets. Beautiful tribute to a pioneer of the surfing industry. (Gordon & Smith Surfboards).
This was his sweet ride…
I even made black eyed peas for the first time ever for MLK day. They turned out delish!
My favorite Eagles song of course is and will always be Hotel California. I’ve been to the actual Hotel California down in Todos Santos, Baja Mexico so it holds a special place in my heart.
Watching the cable news coverage of the Trump rally. The song playing in the arena as the people wait? Sympathy for the Devil. Seems an odd, although maybe entirely appropriate musical choice.
Well, if all it takes to “be” any particular gender, or both, or none, or some other option is to say you are, then why not with political philosophies?
Top o’ teh mornin’ from 19ºF Larryville, GN!

Good morning, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, RabBiT, Fatwa, and Sven!
I remember that song (and ToP).
Glad Mrs. Sven is being taken care of by the locals.
Hai, Sven and Paddy!
Glad Mrs. Sven arrived safely and the locals are being nice to her. (Perhaps her reputation for marksmanship preceded her.) 🙂
Paddy --
ToP is one of the best live acts I’ve seen; even better than on their recordings.
Well…we’ve almost reached 32ºF; guess I can turn off the water drip. Until about 6:00. 🙁

Say it aint so, Sarah.
It ain’t so, Sarah.
Seriously, what’s with the “Cruz is unlikable” meme?
You mean he’s unliked by establishment? Good!
Agreed, Paddy, which was one of Palin’s strengths--all the right people hated her guts.
Cruz reminds me a lot of Tom McClintock, who would have made a helluva better governor than Arnold.
If Palin does endorse Trump, it won’t make me vote for or support him, but it will make me rethink my opinion of Palin.
Agreed.
Gerbils are wise.

They say Alaska has a meth problem and Sarah just gave proof to that.
Apparently to be a Conservative nowadays, all you have to do is say you are.
