Well… Since MX-19.2 Linux stopped working on my POS Dell …
(I’ve tried reinstalling it a few times and the current spate of updates render it non functional. Too bad.)
… I’ve been going through popular distros to see which one will give me similar functionality. I’ve tried PopOS, which is vaguely Mac Like, and which has no repository wrapper, so that makes it hard to get apps that work properly with it. But it’s not horrible.
I’m trying Mint-Cinnamon 20 next. We’ll see if it does the thing. You know the thing?!?
Speaking of which, I’m still betting on Trump to win. Early numbers are optimistic, so we’ll see. Just a week to go now.
Yesterday, we did the MS treatment up in Flagstaff. I drove around to various walmarts looking for a certain type of hair gel which they supposedly sell but which I’ve been unable to lay my hands on lately… very useful for dreads. I’ll probably have to resort to amazon.com.
Still not streaming. I seem to have a mental block. Or… Ima fukken idiot.
Good luck finding a suitable distro! The best medicine for that mental block is just to stream something, anything, for even a short period of time. Get the first one out of the way and the rest won’t be quite so hard.
One Week ‘Til Election Day salutations, Wheelizens!
Hi, dv8! Hope you can find a useful Linux distro…
Just read a link from AoSHQ about how Trader Joe’s has been standing up to BLM shakedowns for 15% protection money in Portland and Seattle. The goons have been marching through stores but not vandalizing them thus far.
I recently emailed Subterranean Press, a small publisher of some nicely produced “genre fiction” volumes (horror, fantasy, SF, etc.) about my displeasure they’ve given money to BLM; no response thus far. Barring what I deem a “proper” response, they’re another small business who won’t get another dime from me.
Companies (think they) have a lot of pressure on them to conform. It’s really mostly Alinsky tactics. Andrew Torba of Gab, although he is under constant attack--love him or hate him--has been pretty effective in dealing with this kind of “pressure.”
Instead of responding to it, he simply posts the Alinsky Fishing emails to all social media, thus exposing the tactic, 4chan can then meme and identify the offending Alinsky/Marxist(s) and sometimes dox the worst ones.
I approve of doxing people who use their public position, especially when they are supposed to be neutral, to shake down businesses. They ABSOLUTELY SHOULD have microphones stuffed in their faces and asked pointedly tough questions.
Winds died down out here late last night -- no fires. Lost cable for a while but the power stayed on. The power company did shut off power down in the flat lands yesterday -- not sure if it’s back on or not.
Back in my day when I lived in California, we used electricity. You walked to the wall and flipped a switch. None of these new fangled candles and lanterns. The electricity came into the house through wires, BOTH WAYS!
Happy Smokey Tuesday, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, dv8, Fatwa, Sven, and Mac! (in order of hair length).
Our electrostatic HVAC filter managed to keep the interior smoke levels down last night, but I really don’t want to keep running the blower constantly. Evacuation orders have spread, but I haven’t read about any homes destroyed.
Since something in the latest linux kernal is conflicting with the Sh*t Dell, I’m trying GhostBSD. Something BSD based should theoretically be way different. I’ll let you know how it goes. So far, with the Linux kernal, only PopOS worked (After upgrades).
They all worked fine until the latest upgrades which included a kernal upgrade.
Anyway, I bought a stack of 100 DVD-R disks, So I can better document these failures. I just used my last one last night and am now into the big stack of 100.
Well, I know that PopOS at least works, but I’m trying ReactOS next. That is actually a Windows clone written from the ground up. #44 in popularity in distrowatch. Might be okay, but it is in an alpha stage, so we’ll see…………..
That is why these various installs would ultimately fail.
The MX19.2 disk has a number of utilities that are useful for diagnostics. So I found out that the hard drive was failing. This was a hardware issue all along. I might as well buy another laptop or mini for the TV, as a new hard drive would cost about the same.

*Sigh*
What a stupid (and dangerous) age we live in.

Good morning, Dv8 and Fatwa -- happy Tuesday.

Now you’re just telling stories! Nobody is going to believe that!
UP HILL!! BOTH WAYS!!!
And we drank our soda with plastic straws!!!
oh Mac…. if only that fantasy were true!! But we can dream!!!
I bet you only had two genders back in the “olden days” too, right? Dinosaur!!!
We only had two genders! And we were thankful!
Happy Smokey Tuesday, Gerbil Nation!

Wish me luck on BSD
GhostBSD: No Go.
Trying FuryBSD
Stand by………….
Might be be better because the multi platform ISO is a bit more sophisticated. We’ll see.
I wonder what it is in the Dell firmware (I assume), that is causing this issue?
I wonder also. Something in the latest releases/updates that make them incompatible with this not really all that old laptop.
It uses KDE desktop by default, I was always a fan of KDE because of how robust and versatile it is.
I kinda wish all these “Live DVDs” had direct installs as an option. You generally have to boot the “Live” demo and then run the install from there.

Pretty much a staple at all Ted Nugent shows the last several years -- like how he ends with the opening riffs from Stranglehold.
whoa! recent Nuge!!
Hi ho, hi ho, Gerbils.
Well, it’s off to work I go…………
Have fun!
