The British had a much better ratio of troops at Isandlwana but did just about everything to throw away their advantages. The troops at Rorke’s Drift were far more outnumbered and I think the Zulus had more rifles than the British troops there, but they fortunately had the benefit of Commissary Dalton who was experienced and guided the inexperienced young officers. I believe he was the one who designed the walls and redoubts they built and guided the defense. He had come out of retirement to serve on this expedition. If I recall, the British defenders at Rorke’s Drift expended about 20 rounds for each known Zulu casualty, a remarkable rate, especially as these were not elite troops. The ill representation of Dalton in the movie was my biggest disappointment with it.
Stanley Baker and Michael Caine. It has always been one of my favorites. Bromhead, the officer played by Caine, was actually almost completely deaf. He had been put there by his fellow officers as a safe place for him to stay out of trouble.
If you saw the movie Gladiator, the war chant by the Germanic warriors was the Zulu chant from the earlier movie.
I have not had enough to effect or impair me in 50 years. I am too arrogant or stuck up to let myself make a fool of me by losing control. I have dealt with enough drunks that I will never allow myself to go there. I was always a disappointment at parties where people hoped to see “Mr. Square” get loose.
In the days when Harper couldn’t get muscle relaxants, and hadn’t yet been diagnosed with MS, She tended towards warm showers and plunges in the hot tub--she wasn’t as affected by heat back in the day. But also used single malt scotch, and for some reason Keebler’s Oatmeal Cremes (no longer made) to soothe the effect on the stomach.
By the way, Keebler’s Oatmeal Cremes — another thing — strangely a discontinued cookie — that is easier to search on Lycos than on any other search engine.
Mrs. Paddy and I are going out to watch our local professional sports ball team play (ball, not puck). As Vin Scully used to say, it’s a beautiful day for a ballgame.
Even though Brave has similar results as google, they have added a new AI summarizer that often gives you a concise paragraph which generally answers your query.
Lycos still gives more unbiased results. Although, I’m not sure it’s deliberate, It’s probably more a products of a late 90s sensibility in the internet in general--neglected for so long as to still reflect those 90s, wild west internet sensibilities.
Happy Caturday, Gerbil Nation!
It won’t be anywhere near a hundred and fark degrees today, but it should warm up to the mid-70’s by next weekend.
Mac -- the Martini was an elegant design with a strong action.
I’ve got an extra choir rehearsal this morning, in preparation for our spring concert in a few weeks, so I’ll see y’all later!
I’m a fan of the vodka martini. Neat. Dry. With a couple of olives. The warmth brings out the flavor of the olives.
It’s an acquired taste, to be sure, but … well…
I prefer my Martini in .303, but that also is an acquired taste.
is this a gun joke?
The Martini was no joke.
: )
True!
Although as the Zulu’s proved, if you have enough warriors to throw against the problem, it doesn’t matter how good your small arms are.
that’s a lesson we all should internalize.

All I know about the conflict is within the old movie, which… I can’t even remember who was in it, although I know I saw it at least once.

interesting.
The .303 was more reliable and more accurate in that rifle..
I figured it was something like that.
I have never had one, though I think I tasted one as a child. I prefer Scotch, neat and warm. Irish is good too.
I have some 10 year old Laphroaig I’m willing to share with you.
I tend to pour triples. major tranquilizing action. LIke for when my Dad passed away. I was pretty upset. Took the edge (way) off.
I’m sure it did!
I haven’t had anything like that since then. Plus there’s the whole “Mormon” thing. : ) : )
doesn’t stop me from remembering how pleasant tasting and feeling they were.
