Chores today. My desktop PC seemed to be running hot, so I opened it up and blew out quite a bit of dust. I also washed ours and the neighbors mailboxes down the street -- they were filthy -- I wonder if anyone will notice? Now on to the yard -- time to trim some hedges back.
Dinner tonight with some friends -- their son works for a leftie lobbying firm -- hope to hear some news that will make me laugh.
I was into two of my computers yesterday. I decided to add video cards to both. This PC was the first one I built without a video card but the Intel CPU graphics were good and I didn’t think I needed it. When I went to the 32″ monitor it did seem to stress it, so I decided to add a low end card to take the load off the CPU. My back up computer did not need one but one of the video connections went dead and I needed to connect two cables to it so I installed a small basic card (it is small form factor), and it worked fine once I downloaded the driver.
I have no heating problems on my main machine. I don’t game so I don’t need super power, and I put high priority on cool and quiet running. To this end I did go pretty high end on my CPU cooler, spending well over a hundred dollars on a high end German cooler. It barely runs so it is very quiet, you can not tell the machine is running but for the lights in front. The CPU was an i7-11700 drawing 65 watts and the primary drive is an M2 ssd that tests at 7GB read and 5GB write. The secondary drive is a 2TB M2 ssd and the main storage is an 8TB SATA ssd. There is a 10TB HDD as a back up to the 8TB ssd and a 14TB hdd for the movies, but the hdds rarely run so the PC is very cool and quiet. The new video card does have a fan but I cannot hear it with the case closed.
Playing with the hardware is easy. I am in awe of wizards that can deal with software, like yourself. I built my first machine in 2006. In 2012 I built my first machine that was slower than the one before, the newer CPUs were just faster than I needed as I only use old games. In fact the games I play won’t even run on the newer machines, I have a machine running XP Pro just for running my games and a few programs that don’t work on the newer operating systems. I don’t have it connected to the internet normally so I am not worried about security with XP.
One thing I liked about my newest PC was the fast startup. It would start and be ready to go in about a minute. I was curious if all the stuff I have added and the VPN I am using would slow that so I timed it this morning on first start. From pushing the button it displayed the log in screen in about 40 seconds and was ready to use in just under one minute. It takes a few seconds longer too connect to the internet because of the VPN but that was included in that minute. It is nice, that and the cool and quiet operation. The machine is fast, too. I have 32 GB of RAM and a good MSI motherboard. I run a lot of security and this may slow it down at times but it still seems quite fast, faster than anything I have had. I really notice when using my backup PC, which only has an i3 CPU and 8GB of RAM. It is a business computer so it is quite stable and will run some utilities that have not been stable on several of my faster PCs. It came with a 500GB hdd. I replaced that with a SATA ssd and added a larger 8TB hdd for storage, plus some extra USB 3 ports, and the video card yesterday. It cost me about $100.00 so it has been great for it’s purpose. My XP box was also a reconditioned business PC and cost about the same. I did the ssd replacement on this and just kept the 500GB hdd as storage. It has been great for what I needed. I had kept one of my older builds as my XP box but the MB battery went dead and it lost the bios and would not boot. This seemed worth trying as it came with XP Pro installed, and it has been fine. My laptop I will probably dump. It came with Vista and I put Win 8.1 on it, but it is not suitable for a newer operating system and it just seems to have no real purpose. It did what I got it for, I spent way to much on it because I did not know enough when I ordered it. I could get a low end one so much cheaper that would be much better if I decide I need one, but there just does not seem any reason now.
I hear you. Unfortunately I had my heart attack the year before I got medicare, so we spent the next four years paying that off. I had a supplementary policy with Humana that was fine but was getting expensive. Three years ago my agent suggested going with a Medicare Advantage HMO. I always resisted those but he said he understood, he had sold against those for many years, but the newer ones were much better. We were able to use all the Doctors we were already using and it has been great. It is only slightly less convenient but it saved us about $500.00 a month the first year, and that would be even more now. We only pay Medicare part B and D. The plan we have does include an extra $5.00 a month for each of us, but includes Over the Counter and Flex benefits that add up to $900.00 a year for each of us. It has really removed a lot of stress not worrying about medical bills. One hole in the coverage we have is that chemo drugs are not covered, so we have a policy that pays $5,000.00 if we are diagnosed with cancer. It costs $54.00 a month for both of us to be covered.
I just saw on Breitbart that former Pres. Trump was shot at a rally in Butler, PA. It looks like he was just grazed in the neck, but I haven’t seen any details, other than the footage.
Should wait for real information, but it’s odd. Appears to be several gunshots -- based on sound that I’ve heard -- but no one else is hit. Where did those shots go? And a grazing wound?
I see it is on the Fox news site. I am not surprised. I have expected an assassination attempt when the abuse of the law did not work. They are truly desperate. Of course the Democrat politicians will condemn the frantic claims that Trump will end democracy if elected, right?
Trump apparently pumped his fist in the air afterwards as they were taking him away and said “Fight, fight, fight!” Any violence against anti-Trump people will now be conveniently blamed on him. J6 redux.
Lol. No emojis I guess!!
Happy Siamese Caturday, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, dv8 (and Harper!)!
dv8 -- it’s good to see you! How are the two new jobs going? How are you and The Plague Fairy?
Off to church to clean out a large storage closet. C’yall later!
No judgement thread pic,
Good morning, Dv8, and Paddy -- happy Saturday!

When do you do open enrollment, Mac? I need to sign up for your class.
Back to chores -- at least it isn’t all that hot today.

I just applied for Medicare Part A.
I feel old.

That sounds pretty good. Mrs. Paddy and I are still covered by my employer’s group health plan, so I only signed up for the minimum required.

Motherfuckers.

There’s something really off here.
The video I saw had too much crowd noise and voice-over to hear the shot(s), but I kept looking in the crowd to see who behind him was hit.
I see it is on the Fox news site. I am not surprised. I have expected an assassination attempt when the abuse of the law did not work. They are truly desperate. Of course the Democrat politicians will condemn the frantic claims that Trump will end democracy if elected, right?
Latest now is that the shooter has been killed. That would explain the addl gunshots.
Of course, Mac -- he’s an “existential threat” and “worse than Hitler.” Killing him is fully justified.
Brandon best get up from his nap and make a statement.
Also saying one civilian attendee was killed.
I’m sure he will. Sometime. Possibly tomorrow.
Convenient, that.
Trump apparently pumped his fist in the air afterwards as they were taking him away and said “Fight, fight, fight!” Any violence against anti-Trump people will now be conveniently blamed on him. J6 redux.
