I’ve heard some people say that the second bomb, on Nagasaki, wasn’t justified. That’s revisionist history. If it wasn’t needed, then Japan would have sued for peace after Hiroshima. In truth, the military leaders didn’t want to surrender after Nagasaki. It took the emperor’s disgust at the loss of civilian life to end the war.
Indeed -- from everything I’ve read, Japan was gearing up their civilian population to defend against an Allied invasion months before and still after Hiroshima. But don’t let that get in the way of a good oppressor/oppressed story.
