Today is the 80th anniversary of the terrible SCOTUS decision in Korematsu v. United States, the case that declared that internment of Japanese-Americans was constitutional. I think something like 8 of the 9 justices were appointed by FDR.
I’m of two minds about that. On one hand, it was wrong and un-Constitutional but on the other hand it occurred during the worse war ever seen and given the times mistakes were going to be made.
I wish our officials could be trusted to make such calls but I don’t think they can be. I think Jan 6 showed that. I was more concerned than I should have had to be as the election drew near and Trump looked more and more likely to win. The banana republic abuse of power by this administration in trying to jail Trump and suppress opposition was very bad, and I wondered how much worse it might have been in the hands of a more ruthless Democrat like Hillery. The garbage pulled by Democrat governors and mayors during Covid don’t make me feel any better.
