Good morning, GN. Hope that Mac and family are doing well and that the Paddy’s are back up to snuff.
Seems like the fire/wind threats have diminished to 0 except for the areas that are still burning. LA will soon shift to full-time finger pointing, recriminations, and cleanup. I’ll start getting our place back in order today -- thankfully no real wind damage to speak of.
Thank you, Sven. Elena is spending most of her time with her oldest sister helping to care for her father. He is fading and the doctors give him a few months. They do have nurses coming in regularly to help and the sisters are coordinating to cover helping the oldest sister. I think everyone accepts that it is time and I think he is ready.
Yesterday morning we woke up to rain in our front bathroom. A hot water line tee had given out again in the attic. At least it has always been hot water lines that break so we can still have water until fixed. The plumber got it fixed about 5:30 PM so we are back in business. Elena had been with her sister since Sunday and just came home Tuesday night because she had a doctor appointment yesterday.
We are due for another cold snap early next week, sub freezing. Should not be a problem if it does not snow.
I am much releaved you were not caught in the fire. Please do be safe. The cold nights are a real problem when utilities are cut or limited. That happened hear a few years back, but at least we did not have the fires to worry about.
Sure Happy It’s Thursday, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Sven, and Mac!
Sven -- I’m glad you and Mrs. Sven made it through this latest round of winds and fire intact. Hopefully your power will stay on for the foreseeable future.
Mac -- I hope Elena and her family are able to take the time they need to say goodbye to their father. I hope his passing is peaceful and pain-free.
Do you think your water line problems are related to workmanship issues, or are they inherent with PEX?
The PEX works well when the right fittings are used but the original builders used cheaper fittings and they have been the problem. The replacements are much better and should outlast us, but the original fittings are time bombs. We have been lucky in that the failures have been close to the access and deck for the AC unit but if one fails deeper in the house it will be much worse. After things dry more we will have someone replace the ceiling in the bathroom. The first failure soaked the same ceiling as did a leak we had when one of the original plastic roof vents split before a big storm. We had them all replaced with metal after that. It is the third time it has rained in that room, but at least there is no carpet or furniture that was ruined.
Thanks, guys -- we made it through this round, but with this dry winter I fear the entire year is going to be one fire after another. Today I can clean up and get things put away and maybe get a few other things done. Next week Mrs Sven has three medical appointments and I have one, so I need to be as together as possible before all that carp begins. It looks like February 25 is when will get the final diagnosis and what’s going to happen moving forward.
The other night I rented the 1965 Frank Sinatra movie, Von Ryan’s Express. It’s a WWII POW prison escape movie that I remember seeing as a child in a theater. Good film -- Trailer below. Have you guys seen it?

It’s a blessing that Elena’s father has his family around him in his last days -- I pray that his passing will be peaceful.

Have you considered putting a heater in that bathroom and calling it a sauna?
Good to know that the fixes should last -- bummer that you have to wonder how long until the next failure.

Try to keep your stress levels down as you navigate the healthcare system. Continued prayers for a positive outcome.
Jack Tatum is happy -- or as happy as a cat can show -- as I put his cat carrier away. He even lightly bumped my hand!
Don’t get used to it. He’s probably just trying to lure you into a false sense of security.
Good point.

I have it in my collection. It has been a while but I liked it. I remember being shocked at the ending the first time I watched it.
Not a typical Hollywood ending with the hero getting away.
Yes. I was young enough that it was not expected. Probably why I remembered the movie.
There was another WWII movie that came out about the same time: The Train. I don’t recall much of that one, but I’ll have to look it up.
I have that, an excellent movie. Much better than the other.
