Monday we had the ac tech come out to do the free annual checkup on our system. We replaced it in 2020 so as we expected it was fine. We have had the same thermostat since we moved in in 2008. One thing I have always been bothered by was the unit must be set for heat or cold. I remember older systems where you could set a high and low temp and it used the appropriate system to keep it in between these. It seemed odd that a fancy electronic system was less versatile. I have almost replaced it three times in the past and I asked the tech how much it would cost. He pulled the unit off the wall, looked at a chart on his tablet, replaced it, and pushed some buttons. Now instead of cold, heat, and off, I have an “auto” choice. All this time…
It may seem petty but it is not uncommon to need both heater and AC on the same day, here. Love Texas.
Thread pic: Good to know.
Happy mid-week, GN. Bit of a storm here last night with strong winds and about an inch of rain.
Thread pic…I know those stares well, and not from squirrels.
Squirrels are amazed; cats are disdainful.
I have seen it more from people.
Happy Wednesday, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Sven, and Mac!
Sven -- I hope the winds didn’t cause too many problems for you. It looks like we’ll get more rain next week.
Mac -- I hope you and Little Mouse are doing well and that things are warming up a bit.
We are doing well, thank you.

I feel dumb, but no tech I have talked to about this ever mentioned an option. This tech said many do not know about this on older units.
My in-laws replaced their HVAC system in the early-mid 90’s and installed a programmable thermostat that does just what you are describing, Mac.
I remember it from the 60s with mercury switches and bimetallic strips instead of electronics..
