At the time it was expected that lawsuits would follow, but I never heard more. They really did go all out on them. I have always liked Mike Rowe and and that interview was just great.
I read Trump’s statement on abortion -- that he is essentially leaving it up to the states to decide -- and not too interested in pursuing a federal ban or taking other federal actions. As a Catholic, I’m amused that many Catholics are disappointed or upset with him not going further.
The Church is not powerless in deciding this issue and does not need the state to enforce its edicts, but except in a few “for show” instances, refuses to do so. They could, at a minimum, refuse absolution or communion for anyone that supports abortion, for anyone that performs an abortion, for anyone that works in the abortion industry. They could go as far as excommunication. They don’t need the state or Trump to take these actions, and yet they don’t.
I went back to the Church ten or so years ago. In my case, I’m refused the sacraments because of a previous, marriage, divorce, and remarriage outside the Church. There are many hoops I have to jump through to rectify this, not the least of which is convincing Mrs Sven to go through 6 months of Catholic preparation for marriage classes. I kid on that point as she is willing to do it and it’s become a standard negotiation joke, for instance:
Me: STOP feeding them damn coons!
Her: Huh. You want me to marry you in a Catholic Church so you don’t burn in hell for eternity, but you don’t want me to feed my friends?
Me: Here’s some more peanuts.
The Church has its own power available to end abortion, yet chooses not to use it. In their eyes, I’m a greater sinner than a Pelosi or Brandon.
When Elena and I got married in 1985, they did not require I be Catholic, I just had to sign a promise I would not prevent her from raising our kids as Catholic, which I would never think of doing anyway. Elena wanted a Priest she knew of who was bilingual. He was an older man, from Spain. He asked her what parish she was part of and said her Priest should do the ceremony, but she explained she wanted a bilingual ceremony and had heard of him. Then he asked me… That got interesting. He was not happy and tried to talk Elena’s mother into stopping her, but that had no chance. Elena’s mother left home at 12 to get away from an abusive father. When she wanted to marry Elena’s father when she got older, the Priest insisted she must forgive her father. She refused and he said he would not marry them unless she did. She told him if he would not marry them, she would just live in sin with him. He caved and married them, she won. This tiny lady was not someone ANYONE messed with.
That’s a good story -- good on Elena and her mother.
In my case, I do find it amusing that my sins are so great that I’m cut off from the sacraments -- which wasn’t an issue for me until a few years back -- whereas devout Catholic Brandon can fully support and promote abortion and he’s good to go.
I am more comfortable with leaving it to the States than the Federal government. The Feds have usurped far too much power. Our founders knew a Federal government would try this and they put very strong measures in place to stop it, but we let them do it anyway. I think we are too far down that road to turn back now and that will lead to the failure of mankind’s best hope of an enlightened government. I believe it will be a very long time before we have another opportunity as good. There were just too many unlikely blessings leading to our Constitution, and modern tech tends to favor dictatorial governments.

In re Angel Studios -- I never heard about the lawsuits they were flooded with. I wish I was surprised at the outcome, but judges have ignored the plain meaning of the law ever since there were judges.
I agree that abortion, like many issues, should be handled by the states. That was the original intent.
Sven -- maybe the raccoons could attend marriage classes with you?
I watched the eclipse. I used a lens projecting it on cardboard until it was full, the dark glasses. A cloud blew across but it actually helped by acting as a filter. It was easier to see when shining through much of the cloud. When clear the small amount of Sun, a thin sliver until full on, was too bright and made it distorted. At full on it was perfect, with a thin ring all around it. First one I’ve seen, obviously the last as well. Elena did not look as she was afraid the glasses I gave her would not work, but she called me when it got dark and the street lights went on.
Not surprised, I expected this. I seem to remember attempts to tax people who fled to other States for a cut of money they made while in California.
I think Germany at first was glad for Jews to leave but then realized they could loot the people fleeing their oppression. CA seems to be trying to follow suit.
Didn’t Maduro in Venezuela let people loot the grocery stores and then blame the owners for not restocking the stores so they could loot them again? Is that California’s model?
The parents of Teh Younger’s girlfriend are from New Jersey. They sold their home in October and have been renting a one-bedroom apartment in their town until they can beat the timeline that would otherwise require them to pay an 11% tax for selling their home and moving out of state.
I tried for years to try to see their side of things, to engage in discussions, to listen. Yeah, no -- not any more. Choose a side -- I’ve chosen mine. It’s much easier now.
