I agree. I wonder if part of the calculus is to put forward candidates that you know will be rejected, then replace them with the person you really want? Get the opposition to spend all of their political capital attacking a dummy candidate.
Kind of what the dems did -- Trump spent a lot of money, time, and effort campaigning against Brandon and then had to switch to Harris. Although I doubt that Harris was the candidate they really wanted.
