Well, the power outage is now supposed to happen tonight, rather than last night. Oh, goody.
Sven -- I’ve seen some of the videos of the West Hollywood (and others) water main break. It’s incredible and a testament to the power of government to ignore basic maintenance. DWP claims to replace 45 miles of pipe per year, but the system has over 7,000 miles of pipe. That means they are replacing less than 0.7% of the pipes each year. At that rate it would take about 150 years to replace all of the pipes, at which time you’d have some pipes that were 150 years old and well past the point of failure.
I called my brother in AZ tonight -- caught him in the middle of adding a floodlight to his flagpole. Said the neighbors across the street and one next door to him are moving and he wants people looking to move in to know what kind of neighborhood it is -- or at least what kind of neighbor he is. I asked which flag he’d by flying and he said after much thought he’d start with the American Flag but may move on to a Gadsden.

I hope California does not make that illegal.
It’s hard to blame infrastructure failures on climate change, systemic racism, or colonialism, but I’m sure they’ll find a way.
