One of my colleagues asked me this morning if cross-checking his roster with the students enrolled in the classes he’s teaching and the supervising teacher’s rosters was a futile endeavor at this point. I told him yes, but I’m going to do it anyway. After a moment’s reflection, I realized that that would describe a lot of work I’ve done over my lifetime.
Good morning, Paddy. A lot of work that we do can be described as futile, boring, or banal, but that’s the nature of work. Some folks are lucky and the percentage of their workday that isn’t that is maybe 40%. I think for most of us it’s 15% or worse. So it goes. The challenge is to do the best job you can despite that.
In your case, I expect that you’ve helped many of your students over the years become better educated as well as better persons.
I went out and bought 8 50-75# bags of rocks for the backyard. In my younger days, I could have carried them one at a time out of truck, around the house, and into the backyard. Today I used a wheelbarrow and had to do them one at a time.

Well up to 108 now -- the humidity tho has dropped to about 40%.
That is just too hot, it sounds like Sacramento. So are you going to give up your air conditioning to save the Earth?
No. We paid our saving-the-planet dues by going without central AC for 25 years. The Earth can look after itself as it has always done.
But comrade, don’t you think your wise rulers know what is best for you? Don’t you think they know what is best for us all?

I have noticed the crows using the shade from a tree across the street when they are waiting for me to go inside after putting out food for them.
This made me think of it.
