Speaking of coffee, I was trying to remember when instant coffee first became popular in America -- seems like late 60’s?

And good morning, GN!

A blessed Sabbath, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Fatwa, and Sven!

Puppers! Cute, cuddly, happy puppers!

Sven -- I remember commercials for the new method of freeze-drying coffee, which came out in the late 60’s, or possibly early 70’s. I checked teh interwebz and learned that instant coffee has been around since 1771. It became popular in the U.S. during both World Wars, when coffee was in short supply. As the methods to produce instant coffee improved, so did its popularity.

I remember it being a big deal in our home, Paddy, around that late 60’s timeframe.

Hiya, Sven, Paddy and Mac!

I, too, remember the start of modern era of freeze-dried coffee; IIRC, it got to be a BFD in the late ’60s with -- I think -- Folgers [correction] Taster’s Choice “freeze-dried-crystals” being first.

My folks weren’t big coffee drinkers; instant was the usual for them unless they had company, in which case the electric percolator got hauled out of the cupboard. (I think they had a second, large-ish electric percolator for when they had parties.)

Also remember when Mr. Coffee ht the market, in-part as they were a Cleveland-based company which went big-time once Joe DiMaggio started shilling for them. (A HS buddy drove a forklift in their warehouse for a while.)

I almost never drank coffee until I was nearly 40. Somone gave me a 4-cup Gevalia coffee maker and a couple of boxes of their coffee as a gift. Decided to make some one morning a few months later and liked the caffeine hit enough that I started drinking it regularly in the morning.

Personally like Trader Joe’s Bay Blend a lot and have recently been purchasing Sprouts’ French Roast (as there’s one much closer than TJ’s); good stuff, IMO.

BBL.

Loved the smell of coffee as a kid; loathed the taste, even larded-up with cream and sugar.

Now I like fairly strong dark roasts with a bit of 1/2 & 1/2 but no sugar. (Although some sort of inexpensive accompanying pastry is indulged-in frequently. Like from a pan of $1.08/box Betty Crocker dark chocolate brownies or TJ’s banana bread mix…)

40!!!!

Yeah…but I started drinking bourbon and water when I was about 19.

“Go directly to Jail bourbon, do not pass Go beer.”

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Tell you what, the two things I give thanks for every morning are 1) an automatic coffee maker with a timer, and 2) hot water for a shower.
