I see there’s a bit of a problem with the hilariously misnamed “justice system” in Orange Cty., CA:
The sunny Southern California county with a population surpassing that of nearly half the states has a Republican county executive, Steve Neuhaus, and a Republican district attorney, Tony Rackauckas, and a big problem on its hands: Its entire prosecutorial apparatus — all 250 lawyers in the district attorney’s office — have been disqualified from participation in a high-profile capital-murder case following revelations that the office colluded with the Orange County sheriff’s department to systematically suppress potentially exculpatory evidence in at least three dozen cases, committing what legal scholars have characterized as perjury and obstruction of justice in the process.
The troubles at the Orange County DA’s office and sheriff’s department (which runs the jail) are severe and long-standing. Unfortunately I hold little hope that the top players will be held accountable.
The Scott Dekraai case is just the latest example of the many problems with our criminal justice system. In October 2011, Dekraai killed 8 people in a hair salon. He was identified by witnesses and later admitted to the killings. In May 2014, two and a half years later, he plead guilty. The penalty phase hasn’t begun, yet.
Unfortunately I hold little hope that the top players will be held accountable.
There’s so much judicial and LEO corruption going on all over this country, it seems inevitable that sooner or later, bad actors will wind-up gibbeted -- or otherwise dispatched -- by a band of angry citizens somewhere.
That’s most probably a bad thing…but it seems increasingly necessary.
And the gummint is practically guaranteed to overreact, which will almost certainly make things much worse.
