Maaaaan…Scalia’s death has made a rather scary presidential election cycle even moreso. I’d like to see the GOP Senators refuse to confirm anyone nominated by Obama but have no faith they’ll do so.

And I don’t have much more faith that -- assuming our next POTUS is a Republican -- we’ll get a significantly better SCOTUS appointee wherein fealty to the Constitution is concerned.

Scalia’s death is the worst possible thing that could have happened and completely unexpected. I can’t think of a stronger and more eloquent Constitutional originalist and textualist and as such, the Conservative side of the country has lost its strongest and most powerful advocate. It really sucks.

That being said, it’s Obama’s job to offer up a replacement and for Republicans to state that they won’t confirm anyone is an absurd position. Absurd, at least, to say out loud.

Absolutely. But -- assuming for sake of argument that’s the stance the GOP Senators quietly agree upon -- at least one will “spill the beans”. (Because nearly all politicians have far worse impulse control than I have.)

If there’s one thing Obama is good at, it’s blaming the other side. He’s in a perfect win-win situation here, and he’s going to beat the snot out of the Republicans for the rest of the year with this.

Obama may offer a seemingly reasonable candidate for the Republicans to turn down or he may go for broke and offer up someone that’s a clear minority so that the Dems can play the race card. Eric Holder comes to mind as does Kamala Harris, our Attorney General--black and a woman and a liberal progressive to the core.

Mitch McConnell has, for all intents and purposes, already done that.

“The American people‎ should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.”

And so has Grassley:

“The fact of the matter is that it’s been standard practice over the last nearly 80 years that Supreme Court nominees are not nominated and confirmed during a presidential election year,” Mr. Grassley said. “Given the huge divide in the country, and the fact that this president, above all others, has made no bones about his goal to use the courts to circumvent Congress and push through his own agenda, it only makes sense that we defer to the American people who will elect a new president to select the next Supreme Court justice.”

I read last night that Obama couldn’t even be bothered to interrupt his golf game at Rancho Mirage when he was delivered news of Scalia’s death.

Sorry to see that McConnell and Grassley have already lived down to my expectations. Why do we continue to let scumbags like them rule us?
