Happy Friday, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Fatwa and Sven!

Mac -- well done on the thread pic!

So, we’re finally getting some of the more costly home improvement projects started, like replacing the old windows with something with a bit more character and energy efficiency and we’ve encountered our first bit of bureaucratic time-wasting. Before our contractor can pull permits, we have to get permission from the neighbors on each side and across the street. I understand the goal is to maintain the character of the neighborhood and not subject your neighbors to really-awful, property value destroying design choices, but this seems a bit extreme. I’ll have to go through the same process when we replace the roof, but I won’t when we paint our house, which could potentially have much more effect on our neighbors than the style of roofing material we choose.

Criminy, Paddy…that seems sort of crazy, as one vindictive neighbor could make doing necessary things, like the roof, sort of difficult. (Not that the farkwads in Sacramento haven’t already limited your roofing choices substantially. And City of L.A. has gone even moar fascist re same.)

Much as I utterly loathe the idea, seems like it would be better for the city gummint to create / enforce guidelines. Not that they’d be objective, but probably a teensy bit better than a jackwagon neighbor…

Since you’ll have more latitude re the paint, this article might be helpful. 👿
