I wish I could say I was surprised by the 9th Circus, but, sadly, I’m not. The constitution of the state of California guarantees a right to self-defense, but not a right to keep and bear arms. Unfortunately, the legislature has made all effective means of self-defense illegal. I don’t know how you would bring such a case before the courts -- it seems every case just addresses a single law.
Don’t know enough about the CA constitution -- or legal theory in general -- to have an intelligent response to the conundrum Paddy raised. (Except my usual hot-headed one of pointing out the 2A exists for precisely the purpose of retaining one’s legal and natural rights when the gummint oversteps its bounds.)

I really hate me some traitors to the U.S. Constitution; too bad they won’t face the, erm, maximum penalty they deserve.
