Fatwa Arbuckle: Misanthropologist

Friday salutations, Wheelizens!

I hope Mac’s thread pic cat isn’t stalking this titwillow:

Made it through the GOP convention without watching a single minute of it; intend to do the same for next week’s festivities carpshow in Philly.

I am glad there was so little trouble in Cleveland; hope they got some good PR this week.

Cleveland hospitality sources inform me that most of the bars and restaurants downtown were somewhat dead this week. Conventioneers weren’t patronizing them much, and locals stayed-away from the anticipated GOP hordes and mayhem. (I suspect the much-touted “economic benefits” of the convention were oversold, which surprises me not at all.)

Because I’m a Bad Gerbil, I hope Bernie’s supporters cause some trouble next week. 👿

Good morning and happy Friday!

Hi Fatwa!

I watched Trump’s speech last night. He did a better job than I would have thought. He stayed on point, but kept that angry-outsider tone.

Everyone praised little Ivanka’s introduction, but I found myself not believing a single word she said about her father.

On the plus side in our lives out here, central AC is live and well. Who knew that there was such a thing that could cool off an entire home?

Hai, Sven!

Came across some alleged highlight lines from Trump’s speech last night and then read ’em in context from a complete transcript.

I will work with, and appoint, the best prosecutors and law enforcement officials in the country to get the job properly done. In this race for the White House, I am the law and order candidate.

Of course, he doesn’t go into any detail. Nor does he call out recent malfeasance by the IRS, DoJ, BATFE, EPA or other government agencies who have violated the law egregiously with effectively no consequences

In checking his position, he also seems to be a great big drug warrior. The stupid War on Drugs has caused more corrosion of personal liberty than any other single policy in my lifetime. (We should have learned from the failure -- and consequences -- of alcohol prohibition that it doesn’t work When it was repealed, the drive-by shootings it caused stopped nearly overnight and the corruption of public officials was significantly reduced.)

So, big strike one against him AFAIC.

“Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it.”

He knows the system so well because he’s a yuuuuge crony capitalist. Whatever he does will be the precise opposite of what I would consider fixing it.

That statement also goes beyond declaring himself a Great Man; he tells us he’s the Greatest Man.

Ah, no; strike two.

“I have visited the laid-off factory workers, and the communities crushed by our horrible and unfair trade deals. These are the forgotten men and women of our country. People who work hard but no longer have a voice. I am your voice.”

Once again, no…he is categorically not my voice.

Our trade, tax and regulatory policies are horrible for business (among other things). Pare them back with a freakin’ chainsaw and let entrepreneurs build their better mousetraps without the government putting them in a chokehold.

Sadly, actual free markets are antithetical to both major parties. As is liberty, which Trump really didn’t mention in any significant manner.

Strike three.

Happy Friday, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Fatwa, and Sven!

Since the cat has been snared by the nefarious blue booby trap, this titmouse feels safe.

I’m with Sven in re AC. We replaced our 30 year old system and can now cool the house below 80 °.

I see the Mohammedans of München are demonstrating how peaceful they are.

I’m sure their motivation is still a puzzlement to President 4 Putt.
