Fatwa Arbuckle: Misanthropologist

G’mornin’, GN!

Nice thread pic, Mac; heh.

Yesterday’s Great Cell Phone Clusterfark left me with no service for at least 12 hours and Jim’s went out at some point, too. As such, I’ve got a preposterous amount of shit to do after I get questions cleared-up…much of which will have to wait until Jim’s up and about; the three-hour time difference is a PITA today.

Assuming the damned network is working today.

Oh well; BBL.

What’s up with the cell phone outage? A nationwide thing?

Fatwa Arbuckle: Misanthropologist

Hi, Mac and Sven!

Sven --

T-Mobile’s entire phone and text network (which Jim, Brenda and I are all on) carped its bed yesterday; thus far, they’re not being forthcoming about what happened. Seems like it started in the SE part of the country and spread north and west over several hours.

And it appears that some other carriers may have been affected, but that’s pretty anecdotal as best I’ve been able to tell so far.

Mac --

This morning, my phone had 27 updates pending. The only times I’ve ever had so many have been when setting-up a new phone or recovering from a complete reset.

Don’t have a good grasp on cellular technology, but I strongly suspect that someone exploited a vulnerability yesterday…and that it was at least suspected that vulnerability was common to all of those updated apps today.

But I truly have no actual clue.

(FWIW, I only have a handful of third-party apps on my phone, as I have no interest in larding it up with stuff I don’t absolutely need. )

Watching it happen on downdetector.com in something resembling real-time was rather interesting.

Happy Punday Monday -- wait, it’s Tuesday -- Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Fatwa, Mac, and Sven!

Mrs. Paddy came home last night and said, “Did you get any of my messages or texts?” I’d received the one about 45 minutes earlier, but missed all of the others. I did get one three hours later. I’m still waiting on the voice mails.

Fatwa -- good luck on the carp-tonne of work.

Day One of our retreat went well. It actually didn’t seem like three hours. Hopefully today goes as well.

I was watching some video of a shooting that happened during one of the statue demolitions in New Mexico. What struck me, and I’ve seen it in a lot of other videos, is the way people act as if their video phone is some type of talisman that will protect them from harm. Here’s a guy with a gun and there’s a bunch of people, arms outstretched holding their precious phones, recording the the guy.

It’s another quasi-religious aspect of these idiots and their causes, reminiscent of Christians holding crosses in front of them to ward off evil.
