Good morning, GN -- beyond that I got nothing except a vague apprehension that some crisis or other will strike today. Or that could just be indigestion.
You had to say it, didn’t you? My AT&T internet went down this morning and my air conditioning stopped working this morning. It is close to a hundred today, a TEXAS hundred degrees. AC tech will come tomorrow evening. At least my phone allows a bit of internet access.
I did not notice the AC going out last night as I had a blood sugar crash and that meant feeling very hot with profuse sweating and shaking until I got the level up.
We had our flower of 80s technology A/C unit fail a year ago Memorial Day (it’s always on a holiday).
It was already in the mid-90s by then and while Mr. TeX can handle the heat, I can’t.
We got one of those portable A/C units at Home Depot and set it up in the master so I had some place to escape to.
I’m glad we got it because the A/C guy was lackadaisical in the extreme. It took five days for him to finally get the job done.
I was thinking of that. This company is good, the first time I used them, several years ago, our AC went out on the weekend with an appraiser coming Monday for a refinance. They came out that night and got us running in a few hours. Needed new capacitors and maybe a fan motor for the compressor unit. I had everything needed in his truck, with some rigging. I ended up paying him more than he asked. I was impressed.
Wow. That’s a bummer. Hope you get it fixed promptly, Mac.
But… it makes me think about Miss Harper. Maybe I should get a portable AC in advance of this happening.
There are those Free standing ones that put the heat into water, that you then have to drain and refill periodically.
Also, We have this small, unopenable window in the bedroom. We usually keep it covered by a picture anyway. The Room has a huge almost wall-sized window also.
Anyway, the small window is probably just big enough for an AC unit. Then we’d have a backup for when our main unit fails.
Also, it might actually save us money to be honest. Because although Harper needs it to be cold, especially to sleep well (i’m pretty used to sleeping in teh cold all year ’round also, at this point) the rest of the house doesn’t need to be quite so cold. So a small unit like that might actually pay for itself.
Still, for us older foks… not a bad plan to have a backup.
They don’t cost much to buy and I suggested it to Elena. She did not want to, though she is the one that complains of the heat and can’t sleep at night unless it is cold. It made sense to me just as a backup. Maybe she will reconsider after tonight. They are in stock at Home Depot less than 6 miles away for about $150.00 and up. For a little over $200.00 with a remote.
Yeah, they’re pretty cheap these days. Plus, I have a friend who’ll help me put it in, if I want. It’s always good to have an extra set of hands--not to mention an extra brain.
Gosh I just reread your comment. Internet down too. That was me last week for nine days, as you know. Everything okay now. I guess. hope your net AND your A/C is up soon.
I have a dental appointment tomorrow morning so I’m going to try to sleep today for a while, so I’m not so tired in the morning--tonight is work and the Big Route ™. Harper tells me she’s coming along again. That’ll be nice.
Next week, I’m getting a kill switch put in the Caddy, so the battery won’t be dead the next time I try to drive it.
I took it for a drive a few days ago, just for fun. Talked to friends on teh hands free (I installed a bluetooth thingy in it for the phone/stereo) Drove through McDonalds for lunch, Etc. Good times.
It is a local outage, 50 to 100 people. They expect to have it fixed by 1:00. We will see. At least I can connect through the phone. Trying to call them is a royal pain. I tethered my phone so I can use my desktop. I hate typing on the phone screen.
Happy Bastille Day, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Sven!
Today is the first day of the 10 day leadership academy that I’m attending. 9:30 -- 1:00, Tuesday and Thursday, for the next five weeks. Normally it would be held all day, for five days, but COVID. We’ll see how this works out.
By the way, Rush’s latter stuff is very solid. I’ve heard some of their more recentish stuff. I feel like it’s both familiar and different. More mature, maybe. Solid… yeah.
When it comes to a favorite band, there is nothing like the classic stuff. I understand. But it was pretty cool that they kept making music for decades. I heard something from the early 2000s that I remember liking. Geddy’s voice was somewhat lower, also, but still clearly identifiable.
It was easier for me, because they weren’t my #1 band from back then. I think that was probably Gentle Giant for me. After that, though I kinda got more into Prog Jazz and Prog Jazz Rock Fusion. That was when I started studying Jazz and Jazz theory. It was cool but too cerebral in some ways, so I liked fusing it with rock elements--which Frank Zappa (which I didn’t realize until fairly recently) more or less invented.
The largest number of COVID cases in our county have/had come from *one* residential home. That’s evened out a bit since April (they’re also no longer reporting that little factoid anymore*), but as of today, COVID’s popped in one of the other facilities.
I sense a “re-opening” rollback in the offing. Things continue to be “interesting”. Buh.
I think I’ll look into lunch or something.
BBL.
* At one point of the 146 cases in the county, 109 were from the first residential facility.
The local news *was* keeping dual track -- the nursing home and the general population, but I guess that got a little sensitive so the stats are now combined, and even the archives have been purged.

Please accept my most humble apologies, Mac. I really thought it was just overly strong coffee from earlier this morning.
We will live, my friend. I just had to laugh when I thought of your comment.

I hope we get lucky this time.
:: fingers crossed ::
Mine too.
Mine three.

That’s what I did too. I even live streamed over the phone on USB tethering. Pretty low bandwidth but still doable.

Hi, Paddy -- good luck with the training.
I feel like the wrong heads usually roll………..
By the way, Rush’s latter stuff is very solid. I’ve heard some of their more recentish stuff. I feel like it’s both familiar and different. More mature, maybe. Solid… yeah.
I’m kind of the opposite -- don’t care for anything after A Farewell to Kings and that was like 1979?
When it comes to a favorite band, there is nothing like the classic stuff. I understand. But it was pretty cool that they kept making music for decades. I heard something from the early 2000s that I remember liking. Geddy’s voice was somewhat lower, also, but still clearly identifiable.

Has anyone died?
To answer your question, yes, 32 as of today.
The local news *was* keeping dual track -- the nursing home and the general population, but I guess that got a little sensitive so the stats are now combined, and even the archives have been purged.
Sad. All the churches are shut down, so I can’t go light a candle and pray for Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s recovery. Oh well.
Blame Gov. Newsome if anything happens to RBG.
If she dies, it will be because Trump refused to wear a mask.
Yah, I kno. That’s how raaaaaaacist he is.
