Good morning, Paddy, and happy Monday, GN.

Sad news -- Gary Rossington of Skynyrd has died. Truly the end of an era for southern rock.

I thought they all died in a plane crash a long time ago, did some of them survive? Or were some of them not on the plane?

Six people died in the crash, including the captain and co-pilot. Twenty others survived.

The last of a truly legendary group. Very sad news, indeed.

Great song and a great sound.

After the plane crash, the surviving members of Skynyrd initially (and briefly) reformed as the Rossington-Collins Band. They purposely went with a female singer, Dale Krantz, in part to avoid the inevitable comparisons to Ronnie VanZant. Dale later went on to marry Gary Rossington, becoming Dale Krantz Rossington. A long marriage -- over 40 years.

I was lucky enough to see them perform at Wolf and Rismelliers Country Club in Reseda. Not Skynyrd, but definitively a good southern band and Krantz had a great raspy voice and fronted the band well. A great song -- Don’t Misunderstand Me.

Skynyrd had a huge impact in a short amount of time. In the late 60’s and early 70’s, southern rock had the Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels and a few others, but southern rock as a genre really didn’t exist. Skynyrd changed all that and spawned a huge number of bands: Molly Hatchet, Marshall Tucker, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Outlaws, etc.

It’s so good to know that homelessness, drug abuse, poverty, joblessness, ineffective education, and a host of other issues have been solved in the assemblyman’s district. Maybe he could share his tips for success with other members of the government before he tries to tackle this particular problem.
