Hi Sven -- yep, Mrs. Paddy is having surgery sometime on Monday and she is counting the hours. She’s in a constant state of pain, but all she’s allowed to take is Tylenol, which she says doesn’t really do anything. I’m just hoping that after this first hip replacement she’ll have some relief while waiting to get the other one done.
Mailed our taxes yesterday. It took more time putting it together than we would have liked. I hope Trump simplifies the tax code.
I wonder how teh bestest place ever will handle Trump’s 125% tariff on Chinese goods? Not very Christian of me, but I hope it hurts them bad. I really only have one good friend left working there, but he ought to be retiring soon, and at a guess 60% of their goods are still coming from China. They do/did maintain high levels of product -- like 3 months -- so they may just try to ride it out without raising prices much. On the other hand, they may wait and see what competitors are doing and just match that.
I’m still working on mine. TaxAct kept insisting that I had an entry in a certain field that then required another form to be filled out. It wouldn’t let me delete that form and every time I went through the form with the offending field, everything looked right. I was stuck in a loop and had to delete a bunch of stuff, then re-enter it.
Unless China starts dropping trade barriers, I can’t see anything but pain for Teh Bestest Place Ever.
When I was still there last year and before the election, the CFO in a meeting said that they were anticipating tariffs if Trump was elected, but I doubt they thought it would be anything like this. Their plan was to speed up alternate mfg sources outside of China. He also said that most of the plants they use are also used by other corps in the same business and that since our prices were already lower than theirs, if everyone raised their prices proportionately, ours would still be lower.
Something else I heard but don’t know how true it is, is that many Chinese companies already own and operate factories in other Asian countries. If that’s the case, they just shift to plants in Vietnam or South Korea or wherever and still make money.
I got an email from SoCal Edison letting me know that I have options regarding what rate plan I’m on. They helpfully listed the other options and what each would cost over the course of a year. Each one would be more expensive. I have the choice to pay more for my already outrageously priced electricity? Sure! Sign me up!
I saw that last week, in a local paper, but that’s been it. Too bad the citizens of LA are going to feel the pain and not the perpetrators and administrators who covered things up and/or allowed them to happen.
Thread pic: Glad to see the coon wearing a seat belt.
Good morning, GN.
How’s the missus doing, Paddy -- still surgery upcoming?

Prayers for a good outcome. XLANative had a hip replacement last year -- last I heard she was recovering well.
Thanks, Sven!
Happy Wednesday, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Sven!
Hoping to get my taxes finished today. Trying to take care of some other stuff, as well.
Sven -- thanks for sharing your thoughts, yesterday. The Morning Rant over at AoSHQ is a good piece on the subject of tariffs.

Regardless of how it plays out, f*ck China.

Now if this was the Catholic Church, it would be big news. Since it’s Los Angeles, there will be nary a peep out of the legacy media.
