A reflective Good Friday, Gerbil Nation.
Good morning, dv8 (and Harper!)!
As Sven said yesterday, none of the explanations for the label “good” really fit.
I hope your trip to Carefree goes well. The last time I drove on Carefree highway was in 1978. Development was just approaching from the South and there was absolutely nothing to the North.
Good to see you, Dv8 -- safe travels and my best to you and Harper.
Hello, Paddy -- hope you are feeling better today, Mac.
Being “Good” Friday, any thoughts on the Mel Gibson film The Passion of the Christ? I usually watch it on this day, but haven’t yet. It’s incredibly brutal, but also quite moving.
Sven, have you seen the movie, Risen (2016)? I found it quite interesting and have watched it several times. Not as graphic as The Passion (and better for it) but there are subtle parts that give a nod to the brutality of the methods used by the Romans. I found it unusual and interesting.
I have seen Risen and thought it was a good movie. In a similar vein, I think The Chosen does a good accurate job not just adhering to the Gospels, but getting the time/place as accurate as possible.
I have not seen that. Thank you. I do have a 1981 movie called The Chosen but it clearly is not this. I see it is on streaming channels I get so maybe I will take a look.
It was Harper or Dv8 that turned me on to The Chosen. I had seen it streaming but never watched it until they mentioned it. I was hooked after the first episode. Obviously it’s a Christian religious series, but it’s more than that -- great storytelling. Watch this interview and see if it entices you to try a few episodes.
Yup. Finally, an independent filmmaker makes a good film about an element of Christianity.
It’s an engaging series with plenty of clever fleshing out of characters. Like making Matthew a high-functioning autistic dude. Lots of fascinatingly quirky stuff like that.
Great acting, great cinematography, story stucture. Etc.
Not the cringe you usually get with the average “Christian” movie, where the Babylon Bee joke is that you need the power of the Holy Spirit to get through it!!
Risen really hooked me. I was really surprised how much was packed into an almost throw away line. When the officer was interrogating the old man he casually spoke of trying to persuade him before he was forced to break him. There was so much confidence and so much implied brutality in that simple comment. I was shocked and had to go back and explain to Elena how much was packed into that simple comment.
Any tips for me? It kinda looks like I can use it in the Roku TV directly. But I have it sitting out now waiting until after our trip to get it hooked up.
Nothing to be sorry for. It is for your entertainment. I hope it works well for you. I can send a bare drive if that would work better. I have extras in that size range.
Oh no. I’m sure this will be great regardless of whether I have to plug it into my gaming rig and use it as a media server or I can plug it right into the Roku. One or the other will work, I’m sure.
Is it Good Friday or Bad Friday?
One more day of work tonight, and then we travel down to the valley.

It’ll suck you in! People are McLovin’ it whether they are religious or not.
It’s been suggested that the Bible should have spoiler warnings for The Chosen in it : )
Risen is very good. Reminiscent ot The Chosen as characters are properly fleshed out and written properly. Great story telling.

Harper and I both love it. also thanks for the hard drive, and sorry it’s taken me a while getting it set up.

For the PC it can just be plugged into a USB 2 or 3 port. I don’t know on the TV itself.

There is a lot on there so I imagine some will appeal to you.
If you want DVD copies of anything I can burn them and send them if you are not set up for that. It does make them easy to share.
I am downloading the series now.
It’s worth a watch, for sure. Remember how Hollywood used to make great religious pictures, back in the golden age of Cinima : )
