One of the curricula that my students can choose has quizzes sprinkled throughout each unit. You can’t move on until you score at least 70% on the quiz. At the end of each unit, there’s also a practice test. I won’t let a student take the real test unless they get a decent score on the practice test. Usually this isn’t a problem. This week I’ve had two students just click through the practice test in 15 seconds and get 0%. Rather than unlock the test, I reset the practice test and sent them a note that they had to take the practice test seriously and show good effort. Note: Gen Z doesn’t read email. One of the students has taken the practice test 5 times -- each time with a score of 0%. I sent another email to them this morning, but this time I cc’d their mother and their supervising teacher. Hopefully their parent reads their email and will have a word with the student.
I should be doing other things, but have wasted much time cleaning out my office and came across an old typewritten poem. It’s from an Italian poet, Michele Pane, to one of my uncles written in 1950. I’ve spent some time translating and this one verse sticks with me:
The dear land
That we abandoned for a chimera
And for harsh and bitter necessity
He fled Italy for reasons unknown exactly and lived for 50 years in America. His name seems familiar to me, but I don’t know what his relationship was to my family or my uncle.
Thread pic: What a handsome coon.
Happy Friday, GN.
Happy Friday, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Sven!
Thread pic: coons are always helpful that way.

What an interesting time to be an older teacher.
Yep. The times are always changing.

Interesting.
That one verse encapsulates the emigrant’s dilemma.
It does do that.
