Went over the hill into the San Fernando Valley last night to check on Mrs Sven. Stayed the night, but maybe 2-3 hours sleep only. The air there is a lot worse than the air here. Just like a heavy cloud over the whole valley.
Back home here -- no real changes in the fire -- bit more containment. Winds are supposed to be lighter today, but temps going up a bit. All evac orders still in place.
Happy Wednesday, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Sven!
Sven -- I’m sure Mrs. Sven felt better having you stay with her last night.
It looks like they’ve made a change in how they are attacking the fire. Last night they had five helicopters attacking the fire, vs. one the previous night.
Out here, not much going on. Evac orders remain in place, but I don’t know how many people in the outlying areas, like us, are following them. Everyone is ready to go, but…
In terms of the fire, it appears to just be hanging on. Strong afternoon winds created some more hot spots, but it doesn’t appear to have become anything that they couldn’t control. No large smoke plumes evident from our vantage -- no flames visible. At the same time several more wildfires have broken out throughout SoCal and one north towards Santa Barbara. While I’m still anxious about the Sandy Fire, I’m more concerned that this is going to be a bad year for fire as none of these fires were caused by traditional Santa Ana wind events. Once those winds kick up -- and they will cuz you know, CLIMATE CHANGE- things throughout all of CA could become cataclysmic.
I’ve said this before, but what is making this fire bearable is that we still have power. When we really hit fire season, the power companies will shut off power the day before it starts and all through the winds.
