Hi, Paddy.

My friends drove out from AZ in a new KIA hybrid. While driving, my friend yawned and that triggered a loud chime sound and a dashboard message that said maybe it’s time to take a break.

The KIA has this wonderful feature: If your Kia model features an infrared sensor on the steering column or dashboard, it actively tracks your facial expressions, mouth shapes, and eye behavior. The system interprets a wide or prolonged open mouth from a yawn as a clear indicator of drowsiness, which instantly triggers the “Inattentive Driving” or “Take a Break” coffee cup alert.

Not intrusive or scary at all and apparently becoming more common. Who knew.

I don’t want an alert that it’s time for a coffee break. I want a jolt that will insure I’m awake as I keep on driving. I also want to watch other drivers as they get a low-voltage shock through the steering wheel.
