I came across The 13th Warrior by accident, but like Die Hard, I’ll watch it whenever I come across it. I discovered it at the same time that I also found The Crow and The Replacement Killers; two more films that are in my always watch category.
I have not seen The Crow, but I really liked The Replacement Killers and have watched that several times. I have been a fan of Micheal Rooker for a long time, and this movie brought Chow Yun-Fat and Mira Sorvino to my attention. That pig, Weinstein, sabotaged her career.
I think you’ll enjoy The Crow -- but the sequels sucked. Brandon Lee’s last movie and I’ve never bothered to look up what scenes they shot with his replacement. This little clip has one of the movie’s memorable lines:
I thought I had The Crow in my collection but I don’t, and it is not on streaming now. I added a link to my list of movies I check for so I can get it if it becomes available.
Oops! I do have it in the movies Stash gave my. I moved it and will watch it. I do like Michael Wincott and did not realize he was in it.
I don’t know. I had hoped he might drop in when Dv8/Harper were active but I think he may not want to talk with me. It is sad, I would love to know how he is doing.
“How would you rate the sequel, Aliens, to Alien?”
I know the sequel is popular and some call it one of the greatest science fiction movies, and I do like it a lot, but I like the original better. I saw elements of an earlier movie, It, the Terror From Beyond Space, and A.E. van Vogt’s work, but the movie was just a masterpiece to me. It helped that they used stage actors in some roles, and just maintained almost unbearable suspense. There are other science fiction movies I really like such as Terminator and Forbidden Planet, which also seems much influenced by van Vogt’s work, but Alien just stands out to me. I saw it in a theater and I have not been that effected since I saw Invasion of the Saucermen as a child. It was a terrible movie but the alien creatures in it terrified me as I had a bad fear of needles then.
When I saw it in the theater, they let us out through a side door. It was dark and the walkway was lined with trees on both sides. Everyone was nervous. Shortly after seeing it I was working late in the plumbing warehouse I worked at. The warehouse was dark but we were working in the packaging room. I went out to gt some parts. As I went down the aisle it got darker as the only light was from the door behind me, far behind me. On either side were the ends on steel pallet racks that disappeared into the darkness above. I suddenly stopped and the hair stood up on the back of my neck as it so resembled the scene where the guy is searching for the cat and first sees the creature. I still laugh at the instinctive reaction. I got my parts and was glad to return to the light.
I started at Lee Meyers Company, my last management job that I took to get away from management, in early 1979 with one wife, and left 12 years later with a different wife. We will hit 41 years married this year.
Congratulations to you and Elena! That’s quite a good number of years. We had our 37th this past May, but I tell Mrs Sven that 37 with her and 8 with the other so I’m up to 45 now.

I’ve been enjoying your discussion of movies. I’m not a fan of horror or suspense films, but Alien was excellent. I don’t think Aliens was as good because you were dealing with a known quantity so some of the surprises/plot twists were missing.
Hi, Paddy. Alien was a suspense/horror film whereas Aliens is more of an action film. The Crow on the other hand is a straightforward supernatural revenge-redemption film. It does have its action/killing scenes, but you also have good dialogue and character development which is why it ranks so high on my list.

I was in college when Alien came out and it scared the p*ss out of me. People were leaving the theater when the alien made its first appearance.
