I got the lawns moaned this morning and edged. In a bit I need to put the last brick in the fireplace, then cover everything with a skim coat of mortar.
After doing a little research on Al Gore’s Intertubes, I learned that a skim coat of mortar was not what I should put on the bricks. It’s the wrong material for the job. Instead I need a high-strength, polymer-modified thinset designed for large format tiles. That type of thinset is designed for thicker mortar beds (in this case bridging the gap between bricks), but will also stand up to the thermocycling of the fireplace. So I headed out, picked up a bag, mixed about five pounds, and put it on. Mrs. Paddy can now start working on the layout.
