CasaK enjoyed a quiet day yesterday, which suited both of us just fine; expect the same today. Made burgers, lit-off some leftover fireworks and enjoyed that one of our neighbors a few houses up the road spent several hundred dollars on fireworks which we watched from our wee front porch.

The Australian possum got the name because it resembled the opossum but it is more closely related to kangaroos and other Australian marsupials and looks different.
I found this 4th a bit depressing so I avoided commenting here.
I find it sad on this day to consider we just got told our President would use air strikes and nukes on citizens who don’t submit to his rule. Remember when Soviet leaders used air strikes and nukes before the fall of the Soviet Union? It seems the Democrats bar for attacking citizens is lower.
The fact the left could so brazenly steal an election and they were allowed to get away with it makes me think it is too late. In the past the damage done resulted in a backlash against them but as votes no longer matter I don’t see this being stopped. I am glad to see States like Texas resisting but I can’t see it making a difference. I don’t know where we went off the rails. I suspect the income tax was a critical step, a declaration that citizens were property or livestock of the government, and making unlimited funds available so corruption and stealing office became much more profitable and rewarding. Maybe just the old ‘ good times making weak men’ concept. We let or children lose sight of how precious our freedoms were and they were easily conned into trading them off for empty promises and the beads and trinkets of free stuff. I just can’t see Sandra Fluke’s free birth control as worth giving up mankind’s best hope of freedom and human dignity. I am afraid the advanced tech we have developed will make the coming darkness terrible in scope and duration.
It is in many ways, a dismal time in America. At the same time, Federalism may be our saving grace; resistance and a harkening back to our Founder’s vision is occurring at the state and local level. Texas and Florida are prime examples, but there are others too. I don’t believe, or at least don’t feel in my gut, that we are heading towards a cataclysm such as 1860 redux. However, there is a reset coming.
America, left to its own devices, might find its way. On the other hand, events around the world will impact what happens here and that we have little control over.
I guess what I’m saying is that there is reason to hope that the values that made America great -- inalienable rights, limited govt, the rule of law, individual liberty, etc., are still something to believe in and that that this country, or others around the world, will once again embrace them. I am sad that I won’t be around to see how the story turns out.
