Last night I went to bed before the hoopla. As usual, after a couple of hours of sleep, I woke & went to the living room to read for a few minutes. I looked at the clock and it was 11:55. Exactly at midnight, I heard three rapid shots & then a firecracker sound. That was it. I guess the neighborhood kids have grown up now. We used to hear only firecrackers. I hope they shot at the ground. only a couple of dogs barked, half-heartedly.
Today was supposed to be BW’s return to work day. She checked & found that she had a week’s vacation left. And probably anther couple of weeks of short-term disability, if we put in the paperwork. Instead, yesterday, BW sent off the email to retire on the seventh. It is the 40 year anniversary of her airport start date. She worked for the private company that ran the department before the airport took it over, so she doesn’t have 40 years with the Airport Board, but almost. She doesn’t want a retirement party. “I don’t want my cashiers to contribute for a costly present and have the bosses take credit for a $40 Walmart cake and a clap-clap meeting!” Plus ,it is too sad. Most of her longtime coworkers are dead or retired, a majority of the rest are contract employees that don’t know her. She had told a trusted friend that she was probably not coming back & told her to start quietly cleaning out her desk. Over the last few years she brought home any personal items. The only thing she wants is her challenge coin and plaque that she was awarded a few months ago. She had been approached by her boss’ aide last year shopping a “you vote for me & I’ll vote for you” deal that repulsed her. So she wasn’t sure if it was a sympathy vote by her boss or not. Then she fund that it was a real nomination by a guy she had mentored into a promotion and continued to mentor. So now it means something. But it can be mailed. She’s not going back out there at all.
Olive the name Black-Eyed Petey. We will be having our black-eyed peas & cornbread later today.
Flipping the channels just now to see when Paddy’s float will go by. I hit the Florida Citrus Parade as the Fayetteville , Ga Tiger Band marched by. Small world, eh?
Hah! That cracked me up. (And was a perfect opening to teh first thread of the year.)
Good morning, RabBeet and Sven!!
Glad to see TeX checked-in last night and appreciate RabBeet’s update this morning.
I was up until shortly after midnight; Mrs. A was already slug-a-bed…because we have a wild lifestyle here in Happy Larryville. 😉
(She was also still short on sleep, a situation which is now corrected.)
Last year, GA made bottle rockets, Roman candles and other stuff which folks used to purchase in neighboring states anyway legal, so it was a bit noisy last night. But I reckon that’s okay, as it was the sound of a teeny bit more freedom.
Special thanks to Mac for another year of diligent thread-keeping duty. And to Jerry for graciously hosting us throughout 2015.

BW said it looked like the Garden of Eden & she wanted to live in it!
I hope BW’s retirement is everything wonderful -- congrats on the float award, Paddy -- I’m finally rested (new job, outta state for training for a week, plane was late, 4 hours sleep before going in to the office yesterday…), which is a lovely thing — and here’s something beautiful, with geometry and math and poetry and symmetry and metaphysics ->
Congratulations to the O’Furnijurs and BW for their accomplishments!
Mr. X wouldn’t go for “Black-Eyed Petie”, but he will go with “Black-Eyed Pea”. For me it doesn’t matter because I’ll now refer to the heifer as “Rabbit’s” (that ought to confuse the hell out of just about everybody)!
2016 0000000000000000 GRABBIN”!
Oh, sorry, anybody have a hangover?

Happy New Year, Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, one and all!
Happy retirement, BW!!!!!
Out of all of the floats built by Fiesta Parade Floats (the float builder we decorate for), all but one (Aids Healthcare Foundation) won an award!
Congratulation, Paddy!
