A blessed Sabbath Gerbil Nation!
Good morning, Sven!

Happy Mother’s Day to all who are mothers, have been mothers, or who have been like a mother to some one. You are the glue that holds society together.

Well, as a non-birthing mother/father, I have been accused of being a mother-fu…. by those I didn’t give birth to! I’m so confused.

That’s understandable, given how many people can’t even define what a woman is, let alone a mother. Just remember, you can be whatever you want to be -- facts be damned!

This seems appropriate for Mother’s Day. Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459) was an Italian scholar who spent most of his career working for the Papacy, and was viewed as one of the brightest minds of his time. However, he also wrote a work called Facetiae explaining that people,”weighed down by a variety of cares and anxieties, should now and then enjoy relaxation from its constant labour, and be incited to cheerfulness and mirth by some humorous recreation.” The jokes Poggio collected are about people in medieval Italy, ranging from Popes to peasants.

The other road
In Florence, a young woman, somewhat of a simpleton, was on the point of delivering a baby. She had long been enduring acute pain, and the midwife, candle in hand, inspected her secret area, in order to ascertain if the child was coming. “Look also on the other side,” said the poor creature, “my husband has sometimes taken that road.”
