To kind friends and absent companions.

Indeed, Paddy’O Dearie.

I was lying here in bed thinking over the emails Fatwa and I have had occasion to exchange over the years, and was reminded of the reverence with which David always spoke of his Brenda. He was telling me once that he could play the piano “technically”, but he could never get the music “under his fingers and he just didn’t have the hands for classical”. But…His Brenda! Oh, his dear Brenda…she had a natural ear for it -- the soul for it. She had a quick understanding of music and would make a fine pianist should she ever choose to learn to play.

I adored listening to that man talk about his beloved.

We didn’t write often but he was a patient, gentle soul and I treasured our exchanges.

I look forward to seeing him on the other side someday; our sweet, curmudgeonly, fearless friend.
